A True Western!

I'm so excited to post this! But I'll be honest: I composed this piece a while ago. (Possibly last summer? I forget... so yes, a LONG time ago.) After I composed it, I realized that I needed to learn how to compose to other genres (Arabian, Comedy, etc.) That's when I decided to start this blog. (It only took me six months to get around to it!)
I call this piece A True Western because... well, it's what I think a true western should be. I'm composing another version (which will be much longer) that I'm going to enter into a contest... more on that to come.
And, here it is:

A True Western by Jon M.

Please let me know what you think, and hopefully, I'll be posting the comedy soon... I love the comedy piece. It makes me laugh. Haha...

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

P.S. Hitting major writer's block on Sci-Fi... ew. We'll see what happens.

  1. Excellence. Extreme excellence. :) I love it!! Honestly, I don't think there has been one of yours that I haven't loved! (My favorite part start at 1:09 or 1:10sih :) LOVELY! Its so epic... :)

  2. Mwahahah! I can post comments now! (: (I had computer problems before.)

Anyway....that was FANTASTIC. I really saw the westernness of it.

On another note, I almost think you should write a second song for the other aspects of common westerns—-gunfights, outlaws, etc. I didn't see those in this song. :)

Great job, and I look forward to your next song. And I wonder how you write comedy. O_o

  3. That was really good! The beginning started out a little...hmm, a little tinny sounding (in my opinion) but further in, past the bell part, it really opened up and started sounding like an orchestrated Western to me :P The ending was great & I love the swells in the music :D Very well done!

p.s. like Jake, I too wonder how you write a comedy piece o_O

  4. Loove it! For being an older piece of yours (I know how that is because I live with EFC) that was immensely impressive. I would never have thought it was a recent one. In other words, very,v ery good. There's a place in southern-ish Oregon that I go to almost every year that's very 'western-looking' and I was totally seeing that landscape with a cowboy riding through while I heard that :D

Successful you are *grin*. Western it is. *grows Yoda ears*

  5. I love the sweeping, epic, wild sound of this piece. It reminds me of buffalo, mountains and plains, wagon trains, and the Pony Express. It has just the right combination of moods. Great work!

The only other input I have is that the ending seemed a little abrupt to me. I don't know... I guess I was listening for a more dramatic, swelling finish or something.

  6. I've been waiting for this piece! You certainly can't disappoint!

I love the way you build into this piece like a western sunrise....and then you hit it perfectly full western ho! YeeeeHA!!!!!

    *listens to it several times*

I can't pick a favorite part! I've been trying! I just can't! I was going to comment last night when it first popped up but I all I could thing was WOW!!!!!!!! (and that wasn't a very interesting comment). Seriously all I can do is listen to this piece and smile, it's just sooo perfectly brilliant! I really love the length of the it too.

Well BRILLIANT as always! Hoping/praying your writer's block disappears into a mere memory!

Keep up the amazing work and thank you so much for sharing it with us!

  7. I could see the cowboys riding their horses through the wild west! This one was awesome, I can't wait to see, er, hear what else you can do with it! Yee haw!

  8. I can't say too much more than what's already been said here, so I'll say this. If you make an album of a select few tracks (like 10, maybe :P) then this should definitely be on it :D

  9. And I just had to comment on this one too... I kind of grew up on Westerns (movies and books), and calling this piece a A True Western is exactly right - you really hit it perfectly. :D I really enjoyed listening to it... and find myself wanting to go write another Western story of my own.
I think I really should think about visiting your blog every time I sit down to write - it can't help but make my stories more epic. :) Thank you again for sharing your incredible music!

  10. It reminds me of "The Magnificent Seven."

  11. Your music almost reminds me of Benjamin Botkin's compositions (I'm sure you've heard of him?). Certainly movie track material. :)
