One Final Teaser

Hey everyone. It's been a while. Today, I just uploaded Epic Music II. I don't know when it will be released on iTunes or Amazon, etc... maybe sometime early February? I'll keep you posted. But all of that to say: it is officially and completely finished.

Here is the artwork, that my amazing brother Michael Maiocco concocted. Thoughts? (I am kind of in love with it... I have this thing for lenses flares...)

There are 13 tracks on the album, that add up to about fifty minutes of music. I'll post more about the album when it gets closer to releasing.

Here is one final teaser.

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

PS - here is an article that was written up about me at my school. Just a disclaimer, the "direct quotes" aren't things I necessarily said word for word.

San Fran

And I'm back.

I made you guys a video. (First time vlog kind of thing... so cheesy is a definite. Sorry about that.)
Just an fyi...
- my family is in Nicaragua on a mission trip, so I went by myself. That's why I filmed it, so they could see what actually happened.
- I flew in Sunday morning, flew out Sunday night, got back at 6AM (a full 24hour trip).
- when they handed me the mic, they asked two questions: 1. who is with you here in the audience? and 2. how did you start composing/get to where you are now? So yeah.

Here is the performance by the talented Murin Symphony. (Here's the MIDI mock-up.)

And that was my trip. It was a whirlwind, but great.

Musically, I thought I'd post something... different. I gave a shot at remixing. This past summer, I decided on a whim to remix Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. I worked on it one night, stayed up till 5:30AM, and then left for Italy the next day, so by the time I got back, I didn't feel like finishing it. True story. All of my friends that have heard it really like it, so... why not share it with you guys?

With having to work on my senior recital (45min of original chamber music essentially) I have literally no time to work on Epic Music II. I'll get to it when I can, and I'll keep you guys posted. So, for being so patient...

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

A True Surprise

Why hello there, to anyone who might happen to still read this. You're the best.

So, I am in week five of school. It's going well. Just crazy busy.

Remember way back when, that piece I did called A True Western, and then I re-did it? Well, I entered that into a contest a year ago. I found out a couple weeks ago that I won. (It's called Young Composers Challenge.) Here's the gist of it: October 6th, I'm flying out to San Francisco, and my piece will be performed by the Marin Symphony. (More on the event.)

Honestly, I am so honored, and so humbled, at the same time. I am so thankful for this opportunity.

It's been a long time since I have last posted. (Daniel White keeps reminding me!) And it's been even longer since I have posted music. It's time to break the silence.

Here we go.

I composed to a short-film called Bound back in the spring. Here's the score: (just a fair warning, it's long. Props to you if you make it through the whole thing!)

I hope you enjoy it. (I cannot post the film... maybe one day.) Any thoughts?

And... I have been in debate about this for a long time. Do I post anything from Epic Music II?

You guys have been waiting for so long without hearing anything... I guess I should.

Yeah, only :30sec for now. More to come later.

Progress report: more than half the songs have been composed for Epic Music II, and all of the ideas are there. They are just not all complete yet. Then after that, we gotta do some mixing and mastering, legit cover art, a digital booklet... the whole deal.

And in other news,  Celtic broke 100,000 plays.

OK. That's it for now guys.

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

PS - here's the debate: Epic Music II or Epic Music 2? I know it's such a small detail... but that could change a lot when it comes to searching for music. Any thoughts?

Happy Birthday

I know, it's been too long. Believe it or not, I am still alive here on planet earth.

Today is August 6th, 2013. A year ago, Epic Music was released. It's crazy it's been year.

Over this past year, I have been working like crazy to finish Epic Music II. Unfortunately, it's not done yet. But, I know I'm very close to finishing. In honor of it being a year, I'm posting the concept art for Epic Music II:

What do you think? It's not done yet... there's a couple of changes I want to make, and some things I want to add. Any advice?

I'll be back soon to post some snippets of songs that will be on the album.

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

Granola and Jeans

I am on Spring Break. Super thankful.

I'll make this quick: I'm working on Epic Music II right now, and it's going good. It's going to have thirteen tracks. That's about all I've got to say on that.

MUSIC: for my junior recital, I composed a piece called Granola and Jeans. (It's an anagram for "Jon and Lanae's Rag".) It was just a fun grand-finale piece. Nothing perfect, just fun. Hope you like it.

I am done with short film number one. I'm hoping to get a final copy so I can post it soon.

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

Before I Leave...

Hello. It's the day after Singles Awareness Day. And two days after my recital.

If any of you are curious, the recital went OK. My weakness is performance in general. I have a very hard time getting up in front of people, whether that is speaking or music or whatever. Also, my curse is this: I never play anything perfect. But that's OK. I have come to accept it. I did the best I could, and that's that. If I get a copy of the recording, maybe I'll post it here, if you want. Just a note: my two theme verses for the recital were Isaiah 43:13, " For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, 'Fear not, I will help you.' " and Philippians 4:6-7, "Be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus." Those verses carried me through the recital. So yeah. I leave for the Dominican Republic tomorrow, which is crazy. I just finished packing. I can't believe it's already here. I just wanted to post before I left and mention a couple of things...

Jill Williamson, the amazing author and incredibly awesome person, has interviewed me. And she is giving away a copy of my album. So you'll definitely want to check it out here. (And if you haven't yet, you should definitely check out her books.)

For the recital, we (Lanae, Matt, and me) filmed a "mockumentary" series. You can watch all five videos here. I originally wasn't going to post the videos here, but I don't know... thought someone might be interested. Just a note: acting is another weakness of mine. At one point in my life, I wanted to be an actor. But then that dream ended when I came to the realization that I was at a slight disadvantage: I had no talent. haha... anywho. In the video, you can see the area where I go to school.

I am currently composing to a short film right now, and I have about 9min of music, which I might be able to post here. (Not sure... I'll find out soon though.) BUT, my next project is a short film called The Endless Forrest, which I am very excited about it. They just released a promo video for Kickstarter, which you can watch here. Recognize the song in the background? (I'll be honest, I didn't for about 10 seconds...) So yes. This should be fun.

I wish I could post new music. But I've got nothing right now post worthy. So until next time...

Thanks for listening (or in this case just reading...)

Jonathan Maiocco

P.S. I was listening to my iPod the other day, and this made me laugh. Perks to being named Jonathan... in all honesty though, those are hard acts to follow. Challenge tentatively accepted.

January 2013

First post of 2013!

School has started. Classes are good. Right now, I'm practicing a lot for my junior piano recital, which is February 13th. I just had my piano juries and passed, so I can officially have the recital. Piano performance is not my forte (pun intended), so I have been performing in nursing homes and for friends to get used to performing.

As far as composing is concerned, I haven't had a lot of time. But every now and then, I get a spare minute to do something... I thought I would post something I've been working on. It'll be for the Celtic album. It's just a sketch...

Thoughts? (I know, it's not traditional celtic, but then that makes me think: what do I call it? What genre is it? Maybe I should just invent a new genre and be done with it...)

After the recital, I leave Feb. 15th for the Dominican Republic (like last year) and I'll be gone for a week. Hopefully after that, I will start composing again.

Thanks for listening,

Jonathan Maiocco

P.S. I'm sharing my recital with my friend Lanae (she plays the French horn). We had to make posters to hang around the GSU School of Music, so my brother and I spoofed some movies posters. It was fun.
